Everything about calling Halifax from abroad
Two Halifax lines, and which one to ring
Halifax's Call us page sorts card trouble into three topics, a lost or stolen card, a declined payment and card fraud, and sends all three to the same number: 0800 015 1515. Fraud inside Online Banking is handled apart, on 0800 500 3914. Halifax gives both lines the same hours, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Replacement cards, payments and general account questions sit on 0345 numbers with daytime hours, which this page does not cover.
When the card is refused rather than lost
Halifax lists the usual reasons a card is declined: an expired card, a mistyped security code, a freeze you set yourself, the balance or credit limit, or the daily cash machine limit, which it puts at £800. It also runs automated checks on unusual spending. Halifax says it will usually call you to confirm a payment, and that it may sometimes stop payments from your card until it is sure it is you. So that it can reach you, Halifax asks you to keep the phone number it holds up to date.
From a phone outside the UK
For callers outside the UK, Halifax prints +44 113 242 8196 for the card line and +44 113 288 8408 for Online Banking fraud. It does not say whether the 0800 numbers connect from a foreign network or what such a call costs; that depends on your operator.
How Losali places the call
Losali is an independent dialler that works in a web browser. Your voice goes over the internet and Losali's telecom carrier connects the call to the Halifax 0800 number, so the foreign network only carries data. Nothing to install and no UK SIM needed, which helps when the phone you would normally use is the one that went missing.
- For a declined card, note the shop or cash machine, the amount and the time.
- For a lost card, say whether it is a debit card or a credit card.
- For Online Banking fraud, list the payments or changes you did not make.
- Keep the phone number Halifax holds for you to hand: its fraud checks use it.
Sorting a lost card without a call
Halifax warns that a cancelled card cannot be reinstated, so a card that is only misplaced can be frozen instead. For one that is lost or stolen, reporting it online blocks it straight away, Halifax says: the app takes a search for 'lost or stolen' and a quick form, and online banking keeps the same option under help & support on the account overview. Halifax says you receive the new card in 5 working days, depending on the type of card, and new debit card details show in the app the next day. Halifax also notes that its brand is changing to Lloyds and that you can contact it in the same ways as before.
What kind of number is this?
Freephone 0800 / 0808. Free to call from inside the UK. Losali shows the price before the call starts.
