Quick answer

0800 023 4567 in 10 seconds

Number
0800 023 4567, the ombudsman's helpline: speak to a customer adviser to bring a new complaint, or for help on a complaint that has no case handler yet (a change in your circumstances, severe ill health or financial difficulty, registering for the online portal). If you already have a case handler, their details are on their emails or letters.
Hours
8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. The ombudsman prints no time zone and says the helpline gets busy sometimes.
Before you complain
Complain to the financial business first and wait for its final response, or for its time to reply to run out. You then have 6 months from the date on its final response to bring the complaint to the ombudsman.
From abroad
0800 023 4567 is a UK 0800 number, and the ombudsman says nothing about reaching it from outside the UK; it prints a separate number for callers abroad and offers to phone you back. From a foreign network the 0800 line may not connect, depending on your operator. Goes through with Losali, from your browser.

About

Everything about calling Financial Ombudsman Service from abroad

What the Financial Ombudsman Service does

The ombudsman describes itself as a free service set up by Parliament to resolve complaints about financial businesses. If it decides you have been treated unfairly, it says it has the power to put things right. Its consumer pages list banking and payments, credit and borrowing (including car finance and debt problems), how a bank handled a fraud or scam, insurance, investments, mortgages, pensions and annuities, pre-paid funeral plans and claims management companies.

Complain to the business first

The ombudsman asks you to complain to the financial business first and give it the chance to sort things out. For most complaints the business has up to 8 weeks; for fraud and scams, payment services and electronic money it has 15 days. Its final response should say how to take the complaint further. You can then go to the ombudsman if you are not happy with that response or have had no reply in time. The ombudsman says you do not need to pay a lawyer or a claims management company to represent you.

When to call 0800 023 4567

The online complaint form is, in the ombudsman's words, the easiest way to bring a new complaint, and the helpline is the alternative: you can speak to a customer adviser on 0800 023 4567. If your complaint is already with a case handler, their details are on the emails or letters they send you. Without a case handler yet, the helpline is the number to use, for example if your circumstances have changed, if you face severe ill health or financial difficulty and need to speak to someone urgently, or if you want to register for the online portal. The ombudsman says the line gets busy sometimes.

Calling from abroad

0800 023 4567 is a UK 0800 number, and the ombudsman's contact page says nothing about reaching it from outside the UK. For callers abroad it gives +44 20 7964 0500, and says it is happy to phone you back if you are worried about the cost of calling. For a complaint about a financial business based in another European country, it points to the FIN-NET network. The ombudsman gives its hours without a time zone.

What Losali does with this line

Losali is an independent dialler that works in a web browser. Your call travels over the internet and Losali's telecom carrier connects it to 0800 023 4567 in the UK, so the network you are on only carries data. There is no app to install and no UK SIM card to buy. You need a browser, a microphone and a stable connection.

Before you call the Financial Ombudsman Service
  • The business's final response, if you have one: the ombudsman will ask to see it.
  • Your notes of calls, emails and events with the business.
  • What you would like the business to do to put things right.

Other ways in

New complaints can go through the online form. Once a case is open, the Ombudsman Connect portal lets you follow it, message your case handler and send new information. Post goes to Exchange Tower, London E14 9SR; the ombudsman says its offices are not set up to see customers face to face. It can provide its complaint form in other formats or languages, and explains Relay UK and British Sign Language contact on its accessibility page.

What kind of number is this?

Freephone 0800 / 0808. Free to call from inside the UK. Losali shows the price before the call starts.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Financial Ombudsman Service free?

The ombudsman says its service is free, and that you do not need to pay anyone, such as a lawyer or a claims management company, to represent you. For the call itself, GOV.UK lists UK 0800 numbers as free; from a foreign network, 0800 023 4567 may not connect, depending on your operator.

When is the 0800 023 4567 helpline open?

8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, according to the ombudsman, which prints no time zone. If your complaint already has a case handler, contact them directly: their details are on their emails or letters.

Which complaints does the Financial Ombudsman Service handle?

Complaints about financial businesses: banking and payments, credit and borrowing such as car finance, how a bank or payment provider handled a fraud or scam, insurance, investments, mortgages, pensions and annuities, pre-paid funeral plans and claims management companies, according to its consumer pages.

Can I go straight to the Financial Ombudsman Service?

Usually not. The ombudsman asks you to complain to the financial business first. You can come to it once you have a final response you are unhappy with, or if the business has not replied within 8 weeks (15 days for fraud, scams, payment services and electronic money).

Is there a time limit?

The ombudsman says you will need to bring your complaint within 6 months from the date on the business's final response. Other time limits are explained on its website.

What should I keep before I bring a complaint?

The ombudsman says to keep a note of any information or evidence that supports your complaint, such as conversations and correspondence with the business, and to keep the business's final response, which it will ask to see.

What if the ombudsman cannot help with my complaint?

The ombudsman says it might not be able to help if the complaint is outside the time limits, is something a different organisation should deal with, or has already been looked at or decided by a court. It first decides whether it has the power to investigate, which it calls its jurisdiction.

Is Losali part of the Financial Ombudsman Service?

No. Losali is an independent service that connects a web browser to UK telephone numbers over the internet. It has no link with the Financial Ombudsman Service, and no access to your complaint or your personal details.

Can I call Financial Ombudsman Service on 0800 023 4567 from abroad with Losali?

Yes. Click the number on this page, sign in, allow the microphone and the call is placed onto the UK network from your browser. The per-minute price is shown before the call starts and a call that does not connect is never charged.
